Scenario 1 — LSG Must-Win-By-X to Leapfrog DC
Setup: LSG and DC tied on 12 points. LSG NRR -0.10, DC NRR +0.05. LSG batting first, posts 195/6.
When two teams are level on points, NRR becomes the tiebreaker — and in this case, the 0.15 gap between them translated into a specific winning margin. LSG needed to win by more than 25 runs to move above DC. Winning by exactly 25 runs creates an NRR tie, which then defaults to the head-to-head result between the two teams. The calculator showed the threshold clearly: 195 batting, DC's typical chase range, and the exact NRR differential needed to cross +0.05.
Scenario 2 — MI Elimination Math
Setup: MI need to finish above RCB on the points table. MI NRR +0.12, RCB NRR +0.08. MI's last match is against PBKS.
The MI scenario was the most complex because it had two valid paths. The straightforward route was winning — any win puts MI above RCB on points. The more interesting math was the margin scenario: if MI were chasing and lost, they needed to keep the defeat within 15 runs to preserve their NRR advantage over whatever RCB's projected NRR would be after their final match. The calculator's projection tool was critical here — it showed that losing by 16 runs while chasing 185 would drop MI's NRR below RCB's projected post-match figure.
Scenario 3 — PBKS NRR Boost vs Bottom Team
Setup: PBKS need to overhaul KKR's NRR before their final match. PBKS NRR -0.18, KKR NRR +0.06.
The gap of 0.24 between PBKS and KKR sounds daunting, but NRR math has an interesting property: a dominant batting performance against a weaker opponent can move the number significantly. The calculator showed that PBKS needed to bat first, post 195 or higher, and win by 35+ runs to close the gap. A win by exactly 35 runs with a 195 total would give PBKS an NRR of approximately -0.03 — still below KKR's projected +0.06, which means PBKS would actually need to go beyond the 35-run threshold to guarantee the leapfrog.
Scenario 4 — KKR DRS Error Recovery
Setup: KKR lost a match due to a DRS error that cost them 12 runs. Their NRR dropped from +0.12 to +0.04.
KKR's situation was a reminder that NRR is sensitive to single-match incidents in ways that points are not. A 12-run DRS error moved their NRR by 0.08 in a single game. The recovery required two strong wins in their final two matches. The calculator showed the specific margins needed: winning by 18 runs in Match 69 and by 22 runs in Match 70 would take KKR back to +0.15 — a number that would hold regardless of what other teams around them did.
Scenario 5 — GT Chase Optimisation
Setup: GT need to chase a 185 target in under 14.3 overs to maintain a NRR above SRH.
GT's scenario was about chase speed, not just winning. A normal chase of 185 in 18 overs would not be enough — they needed to finish inside 14.3 overs to generate the NRR boost required to stay above SRH in the table. The calculator converted this into a run rate requirement: 13.06 runs per over minimum. Chasing 186 in exactly 14.1 overs delivers exactly the required NRR. The margin for error was less than half an over.
