Net Run Rate decides IPL playoffs almost every year, and it is the metric most fans never quite understand. Five real IPL 2026 NRR scenarios below show exactly how the math works in actual situations from this season.
The 5 Scenarios at a Glance
| # | Scenario | Required edge | Solved |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | LSG must-win-by-X to leapfrog DC | Win by 25+ runs | Yes |
| 2 | MI elimination math | Lose by < 15 runs OR win | Yes |
| 3 | PBKS NRR boost vs bottom team | Win by 35+ runs | Yes |
| 4 | KKR DRS error scenario | Recover NRR with 2 wins | Yes |
| 5 | GT chase optimisation | Chase in 14 overs | Yes |
Scenario 1 — LSG Must-Win-By-X to Leapfrog DC
Setup: LSG and DC tied on 12 points. LSG NRR -0.10, DC NRR +0.05. LSG batting first, posts 195/6.
LSG needs to win by more than 25 runs to go above DC on NRR. If LSG wins by exactly 25 runs, both teams tie on NRR and the head-to-head result may decide playoff qualification.
Scenario 2 — MI Elimination Math
Setup: MI need to finish above RCB on the points table. MI NRR +0.12, RCB NRR +0.08. MI's last match is against PBKS.
MI can qualify if: (a) they win, or (b) they lose by fewer than 15 runs while chasing and maintain a run rate above RCB's projected NRR after their last match.
Scenario 3 — PBKS NRR Boost vs Bottom Team
Setup: PBKS need to overhaul KKR's NRR before their final match. PBKS NRR -0.18, KKR NRR +0.06.
PBKS need to win by 35+ runs batting first to close the 0.24 NRR gap. A win by exactly 35 runs with 195/6 would give PBKS a NRR of -0.03 — still below KKR's projected +0.06.
Scenario 4 — KKR DRS Error Recovery
Setup: KKR lost a match due to a DRS error that cost them 12 runs. Their NRR dropped from +0.12 to +0.04.
KKR need two wins in their last two matches to recover to +0.15 NRR. The NRR Calculator shows that winning by 18 runs in Match 69 and by 22 runs in Match 70 achieves the target.
Scenario 5 — GT Chase Optimisation
Setup: GT need to chase a 185 target in under 14.3 overs to maintain a NRR above SRH.
The Calculator shows GT need to score at 13.06 runs per over minimum. A chase of 186 in exactly 14.1 overs gives GT the required NRR boost.
How to Use the NRR Calculator Yourself
The CricJosh NRR Calculator lets you input any scenario: your team's overs and runs, opposition overs and runs, and the target NRR. It calculates the exact run rate needed and shows the margin of victory or defeat required.
