The Formula
Step-by-Step Calculation
Let's calculate NRR for Team A in a tournament where they played 3 matches:
Match 1: Team A bats first, scores 180/6 in 20 overs → Team B chases 185 in 19.4 overs
- Run Rate For = 180 / 20 = 9.000
- Run Rate Against = 185 / 19.667 (19.4 overs = 19 + 4/6 = 19.667 overs) = 9.409
- NRR Match 1 = 9.000 - 9.409 = -0.409
Match 2: Team A bats second, chases 160 in 18 overs → Team B all out 159
- Run Rate For = 160 / 18 = 8.889
- Run Rate Against = 159 / 20 = 7.950 (Team A bowled 20 overs even though they won — team B was all out)
- NRR Match 2 = 8.889 - 7.950 = +0.939
Match 3: Team A bats first, scores 200/3 in 20 overs → Team B all out 150
- Run Rate For = 200 / 20 = 10.000
- Run Rate Against = 150 / 20 = 7.500 (Team B was all out in 20 overs)
- NRR Match 3 = 10.000 - 7.500 = +2.500
Total Tournament NRR
| Match | Run Rate For | Run Rate Against | NRR Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Match 1 | 9.000 | 9.409 | -0.409 |
| Match 2 | 8.889 | 7.950 | +0.939 |
| Match 3 | 10.000 | 7.500 | +2.500 |
Total Tournament NRR = (-0.409 + 0.939 + 2.500) / 3 = +1.010
The Overs Rule — Why It Matters
The most misunderstood part of NRR:Both teams' overs are counted as their full allocation, not the overs they actually faced/bowled.
- If Team A chases a target in 15 overs (all out), they still count 20 overs for Run Rate For (because they faced 15 overs but the overs faced by a team is capped at their full allocation)
- If Team B is all out in 12 overs, they count 20 overs for Run Rate Against (because they bowled their full 20 overs)
- This is why batting first and posting a high total is better for NRR than chasing quickly
NRR Tiebreaker — IPL 2026 Example
At the end of IPL 2026 league stage, four teams finished on equal points. NRR decided the final playoff spots:
| Position | Team | Pts | NRR |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | Lucknow Super Giants | 14 | +0.312 |
| 4 | Delhi Capitals | 14 | +0.198 |
| 5 | Punjab Kings | 14 | -0.021 |
| 6 | Royal Challengers Bengaluru | 14 | -0.289 |
LSG (+0.312) and DC (+0.198) qualified on superior NRR. PBKS (-0.021) and RCB (-0.289) missed out.
NRR vs Head-to-Head — Which Takes Priority?
In most tournaments (IPL, T20 World Cup), the tiebreaker order is:
- Points (most wins on top)
- Net Run Rate — used when teams have equal points
- Head-to-Head result — only used when two teams are tied AND they played each other once
Note: Head-to-head is NOT used when three or more teams are tied on points. In that case, NRR decides all positions among the tied teams.
