Field placement is where captaincy meets tactics. A well-set field can restrict runs, create dot balls, and force wickets in critical moments.
Powerplay Field
Only 2 fielders allowed outside 30-yard circle. Typical setup:
- Cover point + backward point
- Third man + fine leg
- Forward short leg + backward square leg
- Mid-off + mid-on
- Long-on + long-off
Middle Overs (7-15)
Restrictions relaxed to 5 outside the ring. Captains use this to:
- Attack with 3-4 catchers
- Save runs in deep
- Apply choke pressure
Death Overs (16-20)
Maximum attack setup:
- 5 fielders in deep circle
- Long-on, long-off, deep midwicket, deep extra cover
- Sweeper at square leg
- Wicket-keeper + slip for pace
For Specific Bowlers
Yorker Specialist
Spread field - all 5 around the boundary. Trust the bowler to execute yorkers.
Slower Ball Bowler
Mid-off, cover, point inside ring. Rest deep. Force batsmen to take singles.
Wicket-taking Bowler
Slip, gully, point. Attack with catchers.
Match-ups Based Field
Modern captains use match-ups:
| Batsman | Field |
|---|---|
| Left-handers vs leg-spin | Deep cover, no slip |
| Right-handers vs off-spin | Slip, gully, backward point |
| Power hitters | Boundary riders |
| Anchors | Attacking field |
