What is the Border Gavaskar Trophy?

The Border Gavaskar Trophy is the Test cricket series played between India and Australia, contested for the trophy named after two legendary captains — India's Sunil Gavaskar and Australia's Allan Border. India currently holds the trophy after winning the last two series in Australia (2020-21 and 2023-24). The 2027 edition is hosted in India and is critical for both teams' World Test Championship qualification hopes.

Venue-by-Venue Analysis

Nagpur (1st Test) — January 21–25

The Vidarbha Cricket Association ground hosted its last India vs Australia Test in the 2023 BGT, where Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja spun India to victory on a rank turner. Nagpur traditionally offers bounce and turn from day one, making it one of India's most reliable fortress venues against Australia.

Chennai / Chepauk (2nd Test) — January 29 – February 2

Chepauk has been a batting-friendly surface in recent Tests but offers significant turn from day three onwards. The 2023 BGT second Test here ended in a high-scoring draw where Travis Head scored a brilliant 99. India will want to exploit the turning track early; Australia will look to negate spin with their own quality spin options.

Guwahati / Barsapara (3rd Test) — February 11–15

Barsapara Stadium hosted India vs Australia in late 2023 and has produced fast, bouncy tracks that favour pace bowlers — unusual for an Indian venue. Australia's pace attack historically performs well here. India may reconsider their spin-heavy selection if the pitch is green.

Ranchi / JSCA (4th Test) — February 19–23

MS Dhoni's home ground, Ranchi typically produces a slow, low turner that suits India's spin attack. The pitch often offers very little pace and bounce, nullifying Australia's pace advantage. Jadeja and Ashwin are almost certain to play here.

Ahmedabad / Narendra Modi Stadium (5th Test) — February 27 – March 3

The world's largest cricket stadium hosted the 2021 WTC Final and the 2023 BGT fourth Test. Its massive outfield and batting-friendly surface could produce high-scoring draws, but if the series is alive, expect a flat track designed to force a result — or a result on the final day.

India's Squad Expectation

India will be captained by Shubman Gill (assuming Rohit Sharma continues as T20I captain only). The core Test XI should include:

  • Batting: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill (captain), Rishabh Pant (wk)
  • Spin: Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav
  • Pace: Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami (if fit)

Australia's Squad Expectation

Australia will arrive with a strong pace battery — Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc — and spin support from Nathan Lyon. Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne lead the batting. Steve Smith, moving back to his preferred No. 4 position, will be critical to Australia's chances.

World Test Championship Implications

This series carries massive WTC points — 120 for a series win, 60 for a draw. Both India and Australia are competing for WTC Final qualification at Lord's (June 2027). India currently leads the WTC table after their 2024-25 cycle; Australia needs a strong showing to stay in contention. A 4-1 or 3-2 series win for India would effectively secure WTC Final qualification.
